Celia Calabaza is Jicarilla Apache and Santo Domingo (Kewa) Pueblo. An Indigenous artist from Dulce, New Mexico, located on the Jicarilla Apache reservation. She is currently attending the Institute Of American Indian Arts, located in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she will be pursuing her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Arts with an emphasis in Painting and Associate of Fine Arts in Indigenous Liberal Studies. Respectively, Calabaza is a recipient of the Brenda Julian Fine Arts Scholarship, Norman TeCube Sr. Scholarship, and the Career Pathway Scholarship. Calabaza’s artwork bridges the realms of painting, drawing, and digital work. She expresses a deep connection to her cultural background, traditional knowledge, revitalization of language, and kinship. Her vibrant and intricate pieces reflect her identity and personal journey. She seeks to not only express her own experience, and to serve as a cultural teacher as well.
