I had the incredible honor of creating this art piece in collaboration with @illuminative to celebrate the winter solstice. I’m deeply grateful to have been selected for this meaningful project, which allowed me to share a sacred part of my culture and heritage visually.
For the Jicarilla Apache people, the winter solstice is a powerful time of connection and reflection. It marks a season when we come together with our loved ones and relatives to honor the long night. We gather inside our teepees, where prayers are spoken, songs are sung, and the heartbeat of the drum carries our voices into the cold winter air. It is a time of storytelling, of tradition, and spiritual renewal.
This piece captures a moment suspended in time—what it might have been like to come upon a teepee lit from within, to hear the rhythm of the drums echoing in the stillness, to feel the presence of community through voices lifted in song, to smell the wood smoke curling into the night, and to sense the cold breeze brushing against your cheeks.
Through this work, I hope to evoke not just a visual experience, but a sensory and emotional journey—one that invites others to feel the power, beauty, and continuity of our traditions.
